What is Sports Therapy?
Sports therapy is an aspect of health care that specifically focuses on assessment, prevention and treatment of sports related injuries and musculoskeletal pain.
It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work (The Society of Sports Therapists) www.society-of-sports-therapists.org
Who sports therapists treat
Any sports or recreational individual regardless of age and ability.
Aims of a sports therapist
Our aims are to help the patient/athlete to return to optimal levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness as soon as possible.
A sports therapist is able to:
- Provide First aid to injuries in a recreational, training and competitive environment
- Examination and assessment of sports injuries and where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention
- Planning and implementing appropriate treatment regimes and rehabilitation programmes for the injured patient/athlete to get back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness
- Utilising sports and exercise principles to optimise preparation and injury prevention programme.
Conditions Treated
We offer treatments for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions such as:
- All sports injuries, acute or chronic
- Soft tissue injuries (e.g. muscle strains, ligament sprains & tendonopathies)
- Joint stiffness and pain
- Arthritis (Osteoarthritis/ Rheumatoid Arthritis)
- Back pain
- Neck pain (including associated headaches and Jaw related symptoms)
- Pre and post operative care (e.g. fractures, dislocations and joint replacements)
- Specific injury rehabilitation
At Ocean Sports Therapy we also offer GP referral services. This is specialist training for anyone suffering from a certain types of illness including:
- Cardio Vascular diseases: Coronary heart and Vascular Disease, Tachycardia, Hypertension, Angina, Myocardial infarction, Stroke, and Peripheral Diseases. (Note all of these can only be undertaken by the GP referral specialist after stage 4 of Cardiac Rehabilitation provide by a specialist scheme, hospital etc.)
- Metabolic diseases: Diabetes Type one and two.
- Neuromuscular Disorders: Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
- Orthopaedic Diseases and Disabilities: Osteoporosis, Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis and Chronic lower back pain.
- Psychological and Mental Health: M.E (over training), Depression, Anxiety and stress.
- Pulmonary Diseases: Asthma, Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis.
- Raised Cholesterol related conditions: Obesity.
